JANUARY 1ST: THE DAY OF THE SOUL
I’m also going to chime in, and say that January 1st might not be the ideal time to fill your head with a big to-do list. The new year of our Gregorian calendar, is well, kind of a construct. And not necessarily the ideal time to make resolutions.
We are still in the darkest time of the year, and this time is really one of resetting, and of tending to the soil—aka how you feel in all aspects of your life. Let’s save the action steps and big manifestation practices for the Spring Equinox, when the time is much more potent and energizing.
1/1 (first of January) however, is the day that relates most deeply with our soul (the first body in yogic science is the soul body), but this is a stage before anything else has really taken shape (shape and containing begins with 3). One is one, and it is infinite and finite all at the same time. This is exactly how most of us feel like right now. A good moment to reset, clean the slate and tune into what our soul really want and long for.
How do we prepare for “1”? We go to the step before, which is Zero. Going to a place of zero, will automatically zero out anything that doesn’t serve. This can be done in meditation, silence, retreat, or simply by letting go of it all. Letting go of all the expectations, all the things you thought you were, all the things you though you “had to do”—if any of it is true it will find its way back to you.
This is one of the biggest lessons I have learned over the past year (especially after becoming a mother): I am no longer afraid to let go of the need to perform, and to rest and do nothing when I need to. Because I know that the drive within me will steer me back to what I really find important in life. If I keep a dogmatic idea around what I HAVE TO DO, then I lose touch with what really matters to me. It’s all about changing gears, and knowing when it is appropriate to do what. And trusting that you will know, when you listen to your soul’s calling, you will know what is truly important to do, and what is needed of you and when. That to me is living in tune with your soul. And that is what today, the 1st of January, is trying to tell us.
