THE BOUND LOTUS POSTURE
Bound Lotus is an iconic and classic restorative yoga posture, that binds the body into two infinity symbols. The practice of Bound Lotus can be traced back to the Hath Yoga Pradipika. It is also called Baddha Padmasasa, and you will often find historic photos of yogis sitting in this posture.
Bound Lotus works very intensively on the practitioner, and strengthens and repair the nervous system, stills the mind and develops neutrality, and it increase the energy flow to the heart and opens the heart chakra. When the legs are bound in the lotus posture the lower chakras are locked, bringing that energy up toward the higher chakras. The arms crossed behind the back locks the higher chakras, and brings that energy downwards. The energies meet at the heart center, and on a physical level increases the circulation of the heart and the lungs, and on an energetic level it opens the heart chakra.
The body is bend forward and the head is rested on the third eye point, stimulating the pituitary gland—the master gland—which is said to open up the intuition. The thumbs press on the big toes, which further stimulates the pituitary gland, and opens the third eye. When the third eye is open, we are intuitively in tune with the world, and we simply know without relying on the logical mind for explanations. We can operate much faster when we are rooted in our intuition, and we take the actions which are right for us.
The challenges with the Bound Lotus is that it can be physically very demanding. Some people simply can’t get into the posture, and even for those who can, holding the posture for a long time requires a great deal of mental and emotional + nervous system strength.
I wouldn’t necessarily call Bound Lotus an advanced posture. It can be an advancement for you, if the posture is part of your journey and something you would like to practice. But some people are naturally more inclined to access this posture than others. This doesn’t necessarily mean those people are more advanced—who is a greater yogi? A circus contortionist or someone meditating for 50+ years who has never once done Bound Lotus?
Bound Lotus is a meditation on patience, humbleness, surrender to emotions and thoughts, and an incredibly practice to advance you toward your higher consciousness.
If you can already do Bound Lotus or a variation of it (using props etc.)…
You will be surprised about what other “issues” you can expect to be facing during the practice.
Doing the posture is just one thing. Can you hold the energy of the posture? Can you do it for 31min (31min is the maximum amount of time Bound Lotus can be practiced within 24 hours—always take your time and increase slowly)? Do you have the nervous system strength and mental endurance to “surrender” to the posture?
Bound Lotus isn’t an achievement, it is an opportunity to go deeper into your own Self and experience new depths of consciousness. And for that you need practice and commitment, just like with any other meditation.
The notion is: if you can do it, you absolutely should! The benefits and consciousness available through practice of the posture is immense, and it will advance you fast.
If you can do half Lotus or feel like you can eventually get into full Lotus and Bound Lotus…
Having the objective of practicing Bound Lotus can be a powerful journey for you. With time and a focused practice, you will eventually make your way into Bound Lotus, and receive the benefits of this posture.
Many benefits can be gained from practicing Half Lotus, and with guidance and the right props you can lock yourself into Half Lotus and receive a very similar effect to Bound Lotus.
Be patient, and be strategic with your practice.
Your journey does not only include adapting to the physical posture, but you will also have to increase your nervous system strength, endurance and mental capacity along the way, which is very valuable.
If you are unable to do Bound Lotus or Half Lotus, and think this posture might not be for you…
We can all work on increasing our flexibility and getting into and open up those spaces in our body where we are tight, like the hips, and that can in and of itself be a journey, of releasing stored emotions, let go of patterns, and gain access to new energy + work with our mental strength and pranic capacity.
This course is focused around increasing flexibility, attaining nervous system strength, and strengthen mental endurance, to gain access to deeper levels of consciousness and spirit. We will work on that, not only through practicing Bound Lotus but through many different Kundalini Yoga practices and deep meditation.
Anyone is welcome to join, and you don’t have to ever get into Bound Lotus at all during the course.
The course extends beyond the practice of Bound Lotus, and is therefore open to everybody, at any level of practice.
We will meet once a week for a morning practice that includes Bound Lotus, but there is no restrictions on what you can practice in that 31min window. If you have a personal meditation you do, you can practice that one. Maybe you have been doing 11min of a meditation, and you’re ready to increase it to 31min? Or you can do one of the restorative “preparation postures” (half lotus, forward fold, baby pose…) to open up your body and still yourself in a posture.
COURSE FOCUS
NERVOUS SYSTEM STRENGTH — When the nervous system is weak we have a hard time functioning well in life. We can’t comfortably switch between states of doing and resting. We subconsciously avoid situations that challenge us and expand us because we can’t trust our own and our bodies responses.
The practices in this course are particularly focused on strengthening the nervous system—so you can hold the bigger experiences in life, expand in the way you want + go more deeply into your meditation practice.
INTUITION — When our intuition isn’t working well, we have to rely on the logical mind, which is under influence of our programmed beliefs and patterns. The mind can argue any side of a case, leaving us in a state of duality, which slows us down and make us doubt.
When the intuition is working, we have a sense of immediately knowing. We can open our intuition and our third eye with Kundalini Yoga practices that stimulates the pituitary gland.
SUBTLETY — Our Subtle Body gets activated when we slow down, become quiet and go into Pratyahar, one pointed focus, or Shuniya. Through the Subtle Body we can perceive much more information than what seems otherwise available. We know the unknown, we hear the unheard and we see the unseen.
The Bound Lotus posture is especially excellent for training ourselves to go into a state of Shuniya, but this happens also whenever we are meditating and deeply focusing and concentrating, bring our entire being into a state of oneness.
FLEXIBILITY — Our bodies hold so much wisdom, and it also holds our patterns and traumas. When we open our bodies, with postures, stretches, with the breath, we can release stored emotions, and clear the way for more of our innate wisdom to come through uninterrupted.
Through increasing our flexibility, our bodies can feel more open and free of blockages, and we can experience a sense of wellbeing and harmony within.
IMPROVING POSTURE AND ALIGNMENT — We can all develop habits in our lives that results in poor posture and misalignments in the body. The Bound Lotus posture—and Kundalini Yoga in general—is a great tool to help “straighten out” our bodies, giving major muscles the opportunity to realign, relax and get into a better position, resulting in better posture and bodily alignment.
REACHING NEW REALMS OF CONSCIOUSNESS — Kundalini Yoga is also called the ‘Yoga of Awareness’, and through the practice we experience that a new way of thinking, feeling and existing becomes available. When we let go of our limiting believes, and when we clear out our subconscious mind, and we learn to relate differently to our emotions, we can experience new realms of consciousness. We don’t have to subscribe to outside influences or believes. We become more ourselves, and through that realization and experience, new layers of our consciousness can emerge.
HEALING — Bound Lotus is a tool for healing, and it is said to be able to heal any illness in our body, mind and spirit. The practice of Bound Lotus can also awaken or advance our abilities to heal others, through awakening the sensitivity to energy exchange and energy transmutation.
