MY MONTHLY PICKS — APRIL

Every month I share a few of my favorites from the last month. It can be a film I saw that deeply touched me, an online shopping scoop, a recipe that I am currently enjoying, etc.

Follow along, and read below for my picks for April, based on what moved me in the past month.

What I wore… Tabi Boots

Now that the weather is getting warmer, I have started wearing my Tabi boots everywhere. These are Japanese workers shoes that I bought many years ago while visiting Japan. They fit my (kind of flat, square LOL ) feet perfectly. They have lasted me already so long (bought them in 2017), and are easy to keep—just put them in the washing machine. I really love them so much. Has it become my signature? Anyways, I don’t feel attached to only me wearing them, so this month I’m sharing a link to some similar ones that I found on Etsy, in case you have been wanting some.

What I made… Juice Pulp Crackers

Several people asked for the recipe, when I shared these crackers I made out of left over juice pulp, on Instagram. Here’s my “sort of” recipe. As I’ve said before, I’m not great with precise measures when it comes to cooking. It also depends on how much pulp you got left with. I try to aim at a consistency—this one should be sticky, not dry, and not wet or runny either.

Making crackers works best with vegetable juice pulp (I’ve never tried it with fruit juice, maybe I’m missing out, who knows?) They are super delicious as a side dish or with a dressing (I made a feta cheese / yoghurt dressing to go with it—just blend together with some lemon juice).

Here’s what I do…

In a bowl, place left over juice pulp (pulp from carrot juice works well), about 1 cup. Add about half a cup of garbanzo (chickpea) flour and half a cup of either oat or buckwheat flour (or regular wheat flour if you don’t care about gluten). Add salt + pepper, and any spices you like: either herbs (thyme, rosemary, herbs de province etc.) or cumin + turmeric—those are typically my two variations. Then add water slowly a little at the time while stirring, until you get the consistency that you want.

Spread it out on a baking sheet, on a baking tray, and make sure you oil the sheet unless you use a none slip version. Make it about 4mm thick if you can. It’s okay if it’s a bit uneven.

Bake in the oven at low heat, about 170degrees celsius, for about half an hour.

What you need to make these…

1 cup of left over juice pulp

Half a cup of garbanzo flour

Half a cup of other flour (wheat, buckwheat, oat…)

Salt + pepper

+ Spices of your choice

Water

What I practiced… The Bowing Jaap Sahib

In the past month I have amped up my daily practice of the ‘Bowing Jaap Sahib’. If there’s one kriya I can recommend to do, when going through tough times—or anytime to add more stamina and stability to your life—it is this kriya!

It’s also a real beautifier. It brings circulation, supports the lymphatic system, and it also brings energy from the lower chakras to the higher centers. It gives grace, radiance and courage.

What I read… The Teachings of Yogi Bhajan

This isn’t really particularly for this month, as this is a book that I am constantly reading. Yep! You got that right! Every evening I take a moment, and I open to a page, and then I read, out loud, the 1-2 pages that are showing.

‘The Teachings of Yogi Bhajan’ is more than a book, it is a consciousness transmission, and as you read + listen to your own voice while you read, your sound starts to change. When your sound changes (speaking voice + inner voice) your life starts to change. This is actually very logical—just think about how different people speak to you, and how it makes you feel differently—but most people might not even notice how they sound.

Learning to listen to yourself is one of the most profound things you can learn in this life. You will start to notice that your tone of voice + the words that you choose, have a huge impact on how you life is shaped, and how you guide yourself.
