MODULE 1: SOUL COMMITMENT
Through Kundalini Yoga we can open up to a space within that isn’t bound by time and space.
When we are more deeply rooted in this part of us (which is the real us—our soul), we are less swayed by how we feel in our emotional body, and we feel stable. We are not swayed by other’s opinions, or even their presence.
“I am stable, I am me”. We can be deeply connected with our soul identity.
This allows someone to feel comfortable in their own skin. It helps a person to see what is for them and what isn’t—without comparing or competing with others.

WORKSHOP 1
WORKSHOP 2
In the first module of DEEPER STUDIES II we will dive deeper into the theme ‘Soul Commitment’.
Having chosen to integrate Kundalini Yoga into your life means that you are already guided by a commitment to your soul—otherwise you wouldn’t be interested.
Your soul—the real You—isn’t bound by the limits of the physical body, the mind or even bound by this lifetime. Your soul is limitless and eternal.
But most people don’t go through life feeling unlimited. Most people feel that they are very limited—by their own insecurities, by circumstances beyond their control, by societies, family and friend’s restrictions on them. And by their mind’s cowardliness.
“I wish I would have…”, “If only I had the guts to do…”, “If I could just get over myself, I would…” — Any of those ever sound, or ever sounded, familiar?
We can feel so restricted, but that’s not how we are meant to live. And it’s not how we have to live.
Kundalini Yoga is the most wonderful tool (certainly that I have personally encountered, but it is also part of the teachings that this is it) to free yourself of these limitations.
It starts with a reminder and an acknowledgment: there’s more to me than what’s in my mind.
Once we know that, and we keep reminding ourselves of that, we begin to shift our perspective and perception of the situations we are in.
And through the practices, we can work on energetically moving the blocks and solve our problems, without even having to really identify or know what they are.
When we start to be free of the burdens of feeling limited, we connect with this wonderful, eternal, limitless and brave part of ourself.
When we say “Kundalini Yoga makes you more you” this is what we talk about.
ADDITIONAL STUDY
LECTURES
LECTURE 1, YOGI BHAJAN
September 28, 1972
How to Fulfill Your Life — A lecture about knowing who you are, with several stories that illustrate the message.
-
Quote 1 — Know who you are
“Self denial, self criticism, negating yourself, feeling inferior, feeling as a sinner, feeling you are all the time wrong is based on what? It is based on one simple thing. Can you believe that that you are unaware you are you? That’s all it is. All this whole garbage around us means nothing. Totally nothing.
You need not to be spiritual. You need not become holy. You need not study under great masters. You have not to leech around anybody. None. You don’t require it at all, I am telling you listen to me. For God sake listen this word of mine. You don’t require to follow anybody, you don’t require to be with anybody, you don’t want to learn anything. Provided there is a big if, if you know who you are.”
Quote 2 — On initiation (and why we don’t do it)
“How this man can be initiated into spiritual way of life when he is born out of the infinite soul? Every individual has infinite soul. He has infinite mind, which is beyond time.
Can anybody challenge on this? None. He has potential, which is infinite. He has body, which is capable. And still that man is being brainwashed that you will find God. When?
Number is being laid on man. You are going to find God, God, what, God? You are going to find awareness. Where is that awareness? Who is going to deliver it? When he is going to find it? This whole thing is working day and night. And man is going through it. Belong to me I’ll give you happiness.
Ask that guy, are you happy yourself? What you are going to give? Who is the giver? There is one giver only, the cosmos. That supreme consciousness is the only giver. Nobody gives anybody anything. These phonies make lot of noise.”
Quote 3 — Power of your words
“We must work on our potential. We must not talk negative, never say I am bad, never say I am his rebel, never say… they are mantras. It is equally a mantra to say Sat Nam Wahe Guru or Ram or Om or God as to say I am miserable, I am terrible, I am blah-blah-blah both are mantras, vibration. And whatever you are going to say is going to stay. And whatever you are going to say is going to stay and it is going to focus back on you, can’t get out of it. In most miserable moments of your life if you say who are you I am great? Can you believe it that all misery run away?”
Quote 4 — Why do we chant?
Why we want to chant? To create positive vibration so negativity cannot affect us, period. There is no other thing. It is a total selfish affair. However selfish you are, best you will chant. I mean to say it is not the job of the divine people, not at all. Divine can’t do it, they are too messed up. (Student's laughter) It is the job of a real selfish man. He is the one who can find God. Without selfishness God cannot be found because self cannot be found. You have to understand who you are and you have to work with the whole potential. It is just turning the switch, just directing the energy in the right direction, nothing else.
Quote 5 — You are infinite
“And this is what you have to understand in your life. At a moment in your life when you are stuck in your finite form if somebody can just remind you that you are not finite only you are infinite too. The problem is solved. That is the only problem the man has and through practice of this reminder all the time when you ultimately start realizing I am Infinity, Yogiji said it.”
Quote 6 — SELF-confidence
“If you don’t forget and remember that you are infinite you will go through everything gracefully. But moment you forget it, you will lose the self and the confidence they call it self-confidence. You will lose the self, which is infinite, and the confidence, the self-confidence. You will lose everything. There will be nothing worth having other than that. And moment you will realize the self, which is infinite, which is self realization you will go through everything. And this is what you have to learn.”
Quote 7 — When you shop around
“Time is taken when you are not one pointed. That is where time is taken. When you shop around. You know night window-shopping? That’s what you do. Shops are closed, lights are on you see the things, ah that shoe is good. You are not going to come in the morning to buy it at all I know that, but you are happy and you will tell your girlfriend, and you tell your boyfriends, and you tell your parents. And you say I saw a shoe pair of shoe beautiful it is quiet cheap too, it is about fifty-five dollars.(Student's laughter) Wonderful I like it. Neither you are going to buy it, nor you are going to go tomorrow with money and nothing doing. But you have the pleasure to see a shoe, pair of shoes in the shop and you talk about it for two weeks. That is what we do, we have a mind, we have a mind. Our mind is beyond time. But we have a very scattered mind and that is what the problem is.”
Quote 8 — Infinity and Sat Nam
“All I have said doesn’t mean anything except I just wanted to communicate with one word only.
What is that word? Student: Infinity. YB: You are the Sat Nam, Satya, satya means the current, satya means energy Sat means the truth, Naam means the identity, ID, you have lived as a proven ID of truth. In simple language we call it righteousness. And what is righteous living? You lose your past and don’t freak out.”
LECTURE 2, YOGI BHAJAN
July 22, 1978
A lecture about living from infinite identity, about the mind, and the mantra Maanay Ki (the 12th pair of Japji), and about walking with a teacher on the spiritual path.
-
Quote 1 — Finite always seeks Infinite:
“The man always try to worship the infinite, no finite shall be happy if he is not walking on the path of infinite; no one, me, you, and everybody.”
Quote 2 — Seek to impress the Infinite, not the finite:
“Look how foolish you are, you must do to show your neighbors how great you are, why can’t you put the same energy and show how great you are before your God who created you. Why cannot you show to your God, your Creator how great you are as creatures?”
Quote 3 — Shift to positive:
“It takes the same energy to go negative, it is same energy to go positive.”
Quote 4 — on walking on the spiritual path (keep up):
“That’s why some people when leave 3HO normally I say, give him the party, send him, send her, what is the big deal because here we are not confining you, it is not a path of confinement, it is a path where you come and you walk with me, it is a long walk, it is a long walk with me, I shall walk my way, you can come with me or leave me alone. Is there anything more honest than that, if you improve on it please let me know.”
“I have come, I shall go, come along with me, fine, if you don’t come along with me, adios, why to pick up a quarrel, why to do drama, why have a trauma, what for, what, why question, why answer, why waste time? I am going come on, we will go together, if you can’t you can’t, bye, but why you have duality?”
MEDIA
BOOK: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
I would assume that many of you will have already read this book. It is a source of awakening consciousness for many (and has been for several decades already).
This book is an excellent guide and description of how the soul recognizes itself.
It describes Tolle’s own experience of awakening, that relieves his suffering, and which has made him a teacher, guide and inspiration for thousands (millions?) of people worldwide.
I love this book as a first step, and believe it can absolutely wake a person up to their own infinity, and help them understand better what their mind is and isn’t.
The book offers the technique of mindfulness as a way to discipline the mind (which is a great practice—especially when paired with a subconscious clearing practice like Kundalini Yoga), and it also offers another value in showing the pattern from someone who is a great author and communicator of what life on a spiritual path is like.
Definitely worth reading if you haven’t already, and worth a re-read if it’s been a while since you last read it.
DOCUMENTARY: Unmistaken Child by director Nati Baratz
‘The Unmistaken Child’ documentary touched me deeply the first time I watched it.
It is the story of the search for the next reincarnation of a Tibetan Buddhist Lama, Geshe Lama Konchog, by his student, Tenzin.
What this film can teach us is, first of all the acknowledgment that the soul is eternal, and that masters and great teachers do reincarnate. Secondly, we learn about spiritual discipline and devotion, through the trials that the young student monk is being put through on his search.
It is a fascinating watch, that very much show that there is more to our world than what the physical senses can perceive.
Available on various streaming platforms (Netflix, Prime), depending on your country, and available to buy or rent on Vimeo on demand.
KEY CONCEPTS
YOGI BHAJAN ABOUT NEGATIVE, NEUTRAL AND POSITIVE EGO:
“Negative ego is the topic of the psychiatrist and psychologist. Neutral ego is the subject of the people who are studying and seeking the science of the soul. Positive ego, of those selfless beings who will carve this earth with their beautiful beings.“
What is “positive ego”?
Even being desireless is having a desire, right?
The Ego is that which has desires.
— “Negative ego is the topic of the psychiatrist and psychologist.”
— “Neutral ego is the subject of the people who are studying and seeking the science of the soul.”
— ”Positive ego, of those selfless beings who will carve this earth with their beautiful beings.”
THE 3 GUNAS:
The 3 parts of us.
The animal > instinct, impulses, unreflective habit.
The human > The reflective mind, creativity.
The angel > The limitless nature. Our soul. That which doesn’t see the barriers.
-
> The animal (tamasic), can be fed with things like meat, alcohol and tobacco, processed food, sugar. What happens when people drink? They become impulsive, they stop reflecting on the consequences of their actions.
That’s an extreme example (although very common)
Other habits that feed the animal in us?
Fighting
Following the crowd (automatic / unconscious responses)
Positive use of animal? > When we are in danger, and we automatically respond to seek safety. Basic fight for survival.
> The human (rajasic), procreation (sex. animals also procreate but humans mostly procreate for creative expression—whether that results in a child or not).
In terms of food: spices, root vegetables, onion, garlic.
Some systems do not advise eating these, because it feeds the human quality.
> In KY we actually invite these in. It’s a Shakti path. Shakti active / energy) Creativity is very central to this path. You are very encouraged to create.
“People love Shakti, people love Shakti. Shakti comes from devotion Bhakti.
Shakti doesn't come from outside power, Shakti is inside us and that is when I am me.”
We are also not celibate in this system.
These foods creates sex drive.
Depending on where you are at in your life, this energy can be channeled in different ways (or maybe you want to eat less of these, because you want less of this energy).
What feeds the human in us?
Positively: Creative expression, Using our mind (engage in conversation), connection and intimacy with others (“hygge” “God lives in cozy homes”). Building (businesses, family)
Negatively: Destruction. Sophisticated misery.
> The angel (sattvic) Sadhana, meditation, real human connections (we are often satisfied in a conversation when we feel each other’s soul), WTY, chanting, praying, being of service to others.
Foods: fruit, anything grown more than 2 feet above the ground (sun foods)
4 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF:
What did you come here to do?
What have you done?
What will you do?
How will you feel about what you did when you leave this planet?
MANTRAS
ONG NAMO GURU DEV NAMO
“Ong Namo” Calls on your consciousness to become subtle and receptive to its own higher resources. It instructs the conscious and the subconscious to let go of the restrictions imposed by the ego.
All the wisdom there ever was and ever will be is inside this mantra.

Journal through the following questions to go deeper into the themes we’ve covered in Module 1:
What was your biggest take away from Module 1? What stood out to you?
Answer the following questions as good as you can, using your intuition and immediate answers:
—What did you come here to do?
—What have you done?
—What will you do?
—How will you feel about what you did when you leave this planet?
Go deeper into key teachings from module 1, by answering the following questions:
—Describe the soul’s journey through a human incarnation. What are the most important moments in a soul’s incarnation?
—What the different between Ego and the Soul / higher Self? Find your own words and definition to describe it.
—Which Yuga / age are we in right now? What does that mean?
—What are the 3 Gunas? What can we learn from knowing about and understanding the Gunas?
—How do we move ourselves on a positive current? If you were guiding another person, and helping them understand this, what would you tell them?
—Create two explanations for the mantras Sat Nam and Wahe Guru, in your own words. How are the two different? How are they not?
—Why do we tune in with the Adi mantra? What does this mantra mean, and what is its effect?
