WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE SUCCESSFUL?
While we should all hold our individual answers to this questions, most people might be thinking of a definitions of success as achieving certain socially acceptable milestones, or having a lot of money.
In many people’s minds those factors should lead to a happy life.
But the outer successes doesn’t necessarily lead to happiness (many wealthy people can attest to that).
The definitions of success might not align with who you are as a person (or they might, and that’s all fine too).
So what is success then?
To me success is about living out my soul’s purpose, being of service to others in whichever way aligns with my mission, and to experience high levels of happiness frequently, (and yes, having money and basic needs met is also important).
Actually, when studying happiness, and people who by their own definition said that they were living happy lives, this is what was discovered…
In order to increase happiness levels, humans need to be developed in these five areas of their life:
Having basic needs met.
Having meaningful relationships.
Making a difference in other peoples lives.
Being part of a community.
Frequently experience flow state
Did anything on the list surprise you?
One of the major components that instantly shifts peoples perceived levels of happiness was acts of service and helping others.
Another was the experience of flow state. Flow state is when we get into “the zone” working on something or doing something we thoroughly enjoy, like dancing, painting, playing sports, work on a project, walk in nature, have a deep conversation with a friend etc. Those moments that kind of exist “beyond time and space”.
Can kundalini yoga increase our levels of happiness?
Kundalini Yoga has been dubbed the Science of Happiness, and many of the teachings we use in Kundalini Yoga very much correspond with the findings and scientific studies of happiness.
Just from a personal viewpoint I can attest to my own experience of feeling much higher levels of perceived happiness, and I also see that in those around me who practice.
Why am I using the phrase “perceived happiness” you might ask? Well happiness doesn’t really subscribe to a check list idea of what it is. Happiness is about each persons own feelings of happiness. Two people’s lives can look very similar but one person might be entirely happy and the other miserable.
So what makes us happy?
Outlook and mindset plays an important role, and hormones also do.
Oxytocin which is called the “love hormone” is experienced through intimacy, either physical touch, or when we “bond” with another person, and feel safe. If we are deprived of this hormone, that can play a big role in how we feel, so if you’re looking to increase your sense of happiness, this could be a place to start.
How we view our world, and our place in it also plays a big role.
Our mindset can be trained and changed, and this is one of the benefits of meditation and of Kundalini Yoga.
Having a bigger outlook on life changes our perceived levels of happiness. When we get caught up in our “finite existence”, we might feel limited, alone, isolated. When we realize that we are all connected, and we find our essence of spirit, we can experience the flow of infinity, expressing through us, in our finite human form. That feels very satisfying and purposeful which can lead to an increased perception of happiness.
