WHAT MOTHERS REALLY NEED
“Stepping into motherhood is a huge transformation for any woman. It is one of the most common journeys a woman can take—but that does not in any way make it less sacred or special!”
I started ‘Mothers Divine’ after the birth of my son, David Ra. Throughout my pregnancy I had found such tremendous strength in my Kundalini Yoga practice, and in general I just found that my experience of pregnancy had been very different from the narrative of pregnancy and birth that I found all around me. It was actually hard to find literature and communities where I felt my experience of pregnancy and birth was reflected. The general outlook was one of deep fear, overwhelm, different “cooping mechanism” because surely this was going to be something traumatic and exhausting—not strengthening and mind + consciousness expanding. Could it just be that I was a “lucky one”, with my nausea free first trimester, easy-breezy pregnancy + unmedicalized and uncomplicated home birth? Or was there really something to the way I had approached my experience as a whole?
I started talking with other mothers who had also been doing this type of yoga during their pregnancies. I found that in general all of us had very positive birth experiences. Even if things hadn’t gone as planned, it seemed the women I spoke with unanimously had a different / more accepting and positive outlook on their births. We had felt strong and connected during our pregnancies. We had felt prepared for motherhood. And I also found that the children (some women had children who are now 10-13) were pretty awesome, conscious, and mature for their age.
One women describes her experience of this:
“My pregnancy time was my first contact with Kundalini Yoga. I didn’t know much about it, I was just going to classes and chanting the mantras. What I noticed was the protection that I felt was being created around me. When I was walking and driving I would always be chanting the mantra: “Aad Guray Nameh Jugaad Guray Nameh Sat Guray Nameh Siri Guru Devay Nameh”—which is the mantra for protection.
In Kundalini Yoga we have the teaching that everything is learned in the womb. One day my daughter surprised me by humming the melody of “Aad guray nameh”—she was around 13 months old. During the time after my birth I had not returned to class and I did not sing this particular mantra, but I had sung it a lot throughout my pregnancy, so I asked her if she could repeat what she was singing, and it was the melody of that mantra. I was so surprised that I called my Kundalini teacher to tell her. My daughter spoke very prematurely, and learn 3 languages really fast.”
Having something that helps your feel secure and protected during your pregnancy is of such great value. I am so grateful that I was introduced to the yogic pregnancy teachings when I was (about 3 years before I became pregnant), because it gave me a lot of methods to prepare with. Not just prepare for the actual birth but also to prepare my body and mindset ahead of time so that I could enjoy my time of pregnancy, which I really did. But just like the women above describes, even beginning when you are already pregnant can have a huge impact on not only you, but also on your child.
I really feel that this way of approaching pregnancy I something that needs to be known about, and practiced by as many women as possible. I am very passionate about it, and that is also why I decided last year to launch the annual Mothers Divine Course. Because if we can give women back their sovereignty in pregnancy and birth, we can actually change the course of human history. There is a war on birthing women going on right now, just FYI, and it’s really a serious offense to our powers as women that birth has become institutionalized and medicalized to the extend and degree it has today. Humans being brought into the world already drugged up and through vibrations of fear and trauma, is not going to create a bright future. Sometimes these procedures save lives, and we should be grateful for that, but to the extend they are being used today, they actually create more harm than they save lives, unfortunately. It is a big problem.
What we as women have the opportunity and the responsibility to do, is create enough strength and sovereignty in ourselves that we can break that patterns of insanity, by daring to say “no” when it is required, and by knowing our rights + feel comfortable voicing them when we are being coerced, pushed or manipulated into something that goes against our intuitive intelligence.
These practices, this way of approaching pregnancy and motherhood, has the ability to help us accomplish that, and it is therefore of the utmost importance that as many women as possible learn about, apply and teach these methods of creating victory in pregnancy, birth and motherhood.
